If you would have asked me three weeks ago to start a campaign to empower women, I probably would have looked at you like you were crazy and said “I mean I’ll make a twitter page, but I doubt anything will happen.” Three week later, I found out just how wrong I was. For my Social & Not-for-profit Marketing class (MKT 340) , we were told by our teacher Lucy Masterson to get into a group, pick a topic, and “do something with it” When my group got our topic, which was “empowering women to have the confidence in the work place,” we all just sort of looked at each other. How in the world were we supposed to do that?! Here we were, four college girls, sitting in a class room in Champlain College’s Academic Centre in Dublin. Not a clue how we were supposed to instill confidence in women in the work place.
At first, we thought about holding a conference. An event that would have workshops about owning your confidence in the work place. Needless that idea didn’t get as positive feedback as we were hoping. So it was back to square one. With a week until our next presentation. We decided we might as well try to start some sort of movement on social media, just to see if we could do it. A week later, and our campaign, which we titled It Takes One had a Twitter page of 50 followers (and growing), an Instagram, and a Facebook. By the time we had to present this next idea, we were all so proud of the little project we had created. For those who don’t know what our campaign is, I’ll break it down for you;
It Takes One is a social media movement to empower women on college campuses through the act of inspiring others. We aim to share the stories about what inspires women everyday on our social media accounts. On our Twitter, we have been posting articles about women in the workplace in hopes of inspiring those who read it. On our Instagram, we showcase collegiate women from different campuses (Mostly Champlain College as of now), by sharing what empowers them, while our Facebook is another platform to share our Instagram stories on.
Through the speedy growth of our movement, we have been able to reach out to other girls from other schools in New England. For the fall, the Champlain College Women’s Empowerment Initiative has expressed interest in working with us on our growing campaign and incorporating it into the mission that are working towards. All four of us are so proud of what we created, and are excited to see what the future holds for our movement to empower and inspire women.
