Sharon Shannon Concert

This past Monday, March 7th, the Ceol na hEireann: Cultural Immersion Through Music class in Dublin went to a true Irish music event, a Sharon Shannon concert staged in The Helix on the north side of Dublin. Sharon is an Irish accordionist who has taken the country of Ireland to another level musically. She has played with artists like Bono, Willie Nelson, The Waterboys, and Alison Kraus, just to name a few, and she plays a variety of genres including Hip-hop, Rap, Country, and Classical.

She is backed up by her band of an acoustic guitar, drums, electric guitar, and bass. Her latest album, “The Galway Girl” has gone Platinum four times in Ireland and she was named one of the youngest people to ever receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Along with the accordion, Sharon gains fame for her technique on the fiddle (which we unfortunately did not get to see her play) and she also plays other instruments such as the tin whistle (which we did get to see).

Overall, this was a concert of a lifetime. It was quite the way to spend a Monday night in March and we were lucky enough to get to experience seeing a performer such as Sharon Shannon. I was able to snag a video of one of the songs. I also suggest you look up some of her other performances on YouTube, especially her world famous song, The Galway Girl (with Steve Earle)
Cheers and enjoy!
